The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited NNPC Ltd. has committed to collaborating with stakeholders to revamp and commercialise football in Nigeria. This announcement was made by the Group's Chief Executive Officer, Mele Kyari, during a meeting with representatives from the National Sports Commission NSC, International Management Group IMG, and AfroSport Network at the NNPC Towers.

NSC Chairman Alhaji Shehu Dikko acknowledged football’s transformative impact on economies globally and cited President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s directive to prioritise the sport's development. Dikko also mentioned IMG’s involvement as a technical partner, leveraging their expertise in managing international leagues like the English Premier League.

The collaboration rekindles memories of NNPC’s involvement in football during the 1980s when their club, NNPC FC, competed in the Nigeria National League before being disbanded in 1989.
